Abstract

Should the vegetable farmers’ knowledge be improved when their productivities did not meet the community expectation? This question led to the to the following research objectives: (1) to determine the vegetable farmers’ distribution on selected characteristics; (2) to identify their current knowledge on vegetable farm management; and (3) to assess the extent of relationship amongst the farmers’ characteristics and their perceived knowledge on vegetable farm management. To meet these objectives, This research was designed as a descriptive-correlation study. The independent variables of this study were the farmers’ characteristics and the dependent variable was the farmers’ perceived knowledge on vegetable farm management. The population of the study was 517 vegetable farmers that resided in six sub-districts in the city of Kendari; whereas the sample was 99 farmers selected randomly from the obtained stratified population. They were interviewed in February through March 2006. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Kendall Concordant W procedures. The study concluded that: (1) most of the vegetable farmers observed in the study: were old, had primary school education, had long farm experiences, had relatively wide vegetable farms, had sufficient working capital, had enough family members, consumed enough media, had frequent contact with Extension agents, were aware of market information, had several farm tools and equipments, had high income, and husband mostly made farm decisions, (2) considered marketing of farm produce, use of farm technologies, and constraints and opportunities for farm produce development as the three most important knowledge, (3) farmers mostly agreed to the rank order of the nine vegetable farm management knowledge fields.

Abstract

Extension agents had to develop their competencies in promoting small agribusiness capital. They needed this new skill so they could assist small farmers to develop their agribusinesses. Every enterprise – what ever its scale -- needed capital. In conjunction with this, the objectives of this research were: (1) to describe the distribution of extension agents on selected characteristics, (2) to identify the agents’ competencies in promoting small agribusiness capital, as well as (3) to analyze the relationship of the agents’ characteristics and their competencies in promoting small agribusiness capital. Data were collected through interviews with the agents. The obtained data were analyzed by using qualitative as well as quantitative procedures. The research results demonstrated that: firstly, the Extension agents mostly indicated their generic competencies in Agricultural Extension, and lack in specific competencies in farm management, especially in small agribusiness capital formation. Secondly, agents considered promoting the small farmers self-help capability, facilitating the promotion of village financial institution, and evaluating extension program as the three most important competencies, and thirdly, regardless of their characteristics, most of the agents interviewed agreed to the rank order of nine competency areas.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to describe the role of mass media, especially television in disseminating agricultural information to vegetable farmers in sub-urban and rural areas. The sample of the study was 55 farmers, who were randomly selected from a 550 farmer population. The findings pointed out that farmers in general were not interested in the broadcasted agricultural programs, since the programs’ contents did not match their needs. Additionally, the farmers in the city of Bandar Lampung watched a lot more varieties of television programs than those resided in the West Lampung district.

Abstract

Many poverty alleviation programs had been implemented in the past, but only a few made it. In relation to this, the objectives of this study were: (1) to identify the roots of family poverty, (2) to identify factors related to the family poverty, and (3) to formulate a strategy for poverty alleviation. To reach these objectives, 420 poor households were randomly selected from the city of Ambon and the district of Boalemo, Gorontalo Province. They were interviewed from November 2003 through January 2005. The obtained data were analyzed by using the descriptive statistics and the multiple regression procedures. The findings pointed out that: (1) both the urban and the rural poor households lacked in productive and normative behavior, (2) factors related significantly to the welfare of urban poor families were social and political capitals; whereas to the rural poor families were natural, physical, financial, and behavioral capitals as well, and (3) the grand strategy for both urban and rural poverty alleviation should include good governance, capacity building, social capital revitalization, public policy advocacy, social assurance, infrastructure building, community-based economic development, and asset redistribution.

Abstract

Good public health service was an indicator of people’s welfare. In DKI-Jakarta, there was a gap between the expected and the current status of public health. This study investigated the Community Health Center’s performance in delivering health services to the public in DKI-Jakarta. To do so, researcher used the perspective of Balanced Scorecard that included customer satisfaction, financial success, Internal Business Processes, and Learning and Growth aspects. Three community health centers, i.e., one in high income, one in middle income, and one in low income sub-districts were observed in the study. From each health center, fifty customers and ten employees were selected randomly and interviewed in four successive quarters. Of the ten employees interviewed, seven were medical staff and three were non-medical staff. The findings pointed out that the community health centre operated in the high income sub-district performed better than the other two community health centers operated in the middle and in the low income sub-districts. However, further balanced scorecard analysis indicated that the performance of the three community health centers observed in the study should still be improved.

Abstract

This research was intended to identify factors related to the leather craftsmen’s self sufficiency in the districts of Sidoarjo and Magetan, in East Java. A descriptive survey research was accomplished amongst 260 craftsmen in the two districts in April 2005 through February 2006. The collected data were analyzed by using the Descriptive Statistics, the One Way Anova and the Structural Equation Modeling procedures. The findings pointed out that most of the observed craftsmen’s entrepreneurial as well as their self-sufficiency behaviors were low. Furthermore, their self-sufficiency behaviors were related to their personal characteristics, business supports, and business environment.

Abstract

Near forest village residents was one of the main forest share holders. So, they should be involved in various forest conservation efforts. Their involvements not only in activities to keep out people from illegal cutting of the forest trees or to put off forest fire, but also in replanting the forest and in other conservation activities. To improve these people welfare, a study on the villagers’ participation in forest conservation was needed. In this conjunction, the objectives of this study were: (1) to determine the villagers’ distributions on their selected characteristics, (2) to identify the villagers’ participation in the forest conservation, and (3) to determine the extent of relationships amongst the villagers’ characteristics and their participations in forest conservation. The population of the study was the residents of nine near forest villages in Parung Panjang sub-district, District of Bogor. The sample was 115 residents taken randomly from the population in those villages. In conjunction with this, this study was designed as a descriptive-correlation research. The independent variables were the villagers’ characteristics and some supporting factors; whereas the dependent variable was the villagers’ participations in the forest conservation. Data were collected through interviews with the villagers in February through April 2006. Descriptive statistic procedure was used to analyze the obtained data. The research findings pointed out that: (1) most of respondents involved in the study were in the older age category, of the Sundanese ethnic, low in education, had never received any training in forest conservation, low in forest conservation knowledge, mostly worked as up-land farmers for five hours daily, and had also low income, (2) their participations in planning, implementing, and evaluating forest conservation as well as in using the forest products were low, and (3) the extents of relationship amongst their characteristics included some supporting factors and their participations in forest conservation were either low or negligible.

Pembangunan ialah serangkaian usaha untuk mewujudkan pertumbuhan dan perubahan secara berencana dan sadar, yang dilakukan oleh suatu negara bangsa menuju modernitas untuk pembinaan bangsa (Siagian, 2003:4). Tidak perlu diragukan bahwa Indonesia memiliki sumberdaya manusia dan sumberdaya alam yang beragam. Indonesia ialah negara kepulauan yang terbesar di dunia.

Abstract

Penyuluhan seringkali diasosiasikan dengan penerangan atau propaganda, padahal penyuluhan ialah upaya mengubah perilaku individu, kelompok, atau komunitas agar tahu, mau, dan mampu memecahkan masalah yang dihadapi supaya dapat hidup lebih baik dan bermartabat. Agar penyuluhan dapat berlangsung dengan baik diperlukan pendidikan dan komunikasi untuk berbagi informasi. Hal ini dapat dilakukan oleh fasilitator, baik yang berasal dari suatu sistem sosial itu sendiri (internal agent of change) atau yang berasal dari luar sistem sosial itu, seperti penyuluh lapangan atau pekerja pembangunan dari sebuah lembaga swadaya masyarakat (LSM).
